Braces in Cheyenne, WY

Orthodontic treatment has many health and lifestyle benefits reaching beyond having confidence in a beautiful smile.  Having “straight teeth” can aid in brushing, give you clearer speech, make it easier to eat, give you less accident-prone teeth (protruding teeth are more prone to breaking), fewer headaches, improved gum health, more cost-effective dental care, and increased self-esteem.  Because you are able to brush straight teeth more effectively, your improved oral hygiene means less tooth decay and gum disease, which are in turn linked to heart disease and high blood sugar.  Click on the links to the left to learn more about what we offer at our office

Types of Brackets

Stainless Steel

The most common type of braces are metal, stainless steel. With these brackets, you have the option of changing colors of the elastics that go around the braces every visit. Or you can choose a color like silver or clear.

Clear Bracket

This is more aesthetic option that can be chosen. Usually these brackets are just used on the top teeth since the bottom teeth aren’t as noticeable when you smile. Most patients like to use clear or white elastics with these brackets but colors really show-up well with these braces too.

FAQ's

How often do i come in for appointments?

The frequency of appointments depends on each patient, and what type of appliance he or she may have. Patients with braces will require an adjustment appointment every 5-8 weeks, on average. Some types of retainers only require appointments every few months. There are certain types of appointments that may only be offered at specific times of the day, but we will do our best to work with you in scheduling.

Do braces hurt?

The appointment where we put braces on your teeth does not hurt. There is no need to numb your tissue or use shots or anything uncomfortable. Our experienced team will make sure you have the best experience possible! Afterwards, you may feel tenderness or soreness when your teeth begin to move. This will be minimal discomfort and will subside within a few days or even hours of your appointment.

Why is a retainer needed? Do teeth move after orthodontic treatment?

The objective of a retainer is to keep your child’s teeth in perfect alignment after braces are removed. Usually, when braces are first removed, your teeth will all be in perfect alignment, but your gums, bones, etc. will not have completely shifted into their new positions. The retainer holds your teeth in position until your gums, bones etc. settle in to their new positions. Also, in the case of a child, they are still growing after the braces are removed. Sometimes, your child’s mouth will grow unevenly. If so a retainer can be used to make sure the child’s teeth stay in perfect alignment as your child grows.

How do braces work?

Small brackets are bonded to each tooth with an orthodontic adhesive. The brackets are then connected by an arch wire and held in place by small elastics (which are available in many different colors). The archwire provide a gentle pressure that slowly moves each tooth into their correct positions.

What types of braces are there?

Braces can vary in a variety of matieral and apperance. For example, here at Braces Wyoming we carry braces that are either metal, or ceramic (which are clear in appearance). We also carry Invisalign, a replacement for traditional braces that consists of clear retainers that conforms to the shape of your teeth. Braces are an example of fixed appliances. There are also a number of less permanent solutions. These removable appliances consist of retainers, which are often used to hold teeth in place after braces are removed, Invisalign, as well as springs, elastics, and rubber bands which can be used in conjunction with braces.

How do I take care of braces once they're on?

Maintaining good oral hygiene is key. Brush regularly as directed by the dentist and floss daily. Scheduling dental visits can also help keep teeth healthy. Patients should also maintain a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks. You may want to avoid certain foods that could interfere with braces or accidentally bend the wires. These foods may include nuts, popcorn, hard candy, ice and sticky foods like chewing gum, caramel or other chewy candy.

Do braces force people to change their lifestyle?

For the most part, no. You’ll want give up extremely hard and sticky foods and consume more soft foods. You’ll have to spend a few extra minutes cleaning your braces after meals. If you play sports, using a protective mouth guard is highly recommended. If you play wind or brass instruments, you should still be able to play them with some slight adjustment.

How long will braces have to be worn?

The amount of time patients are in braces varies from person to person, depending on the problem as well as the treatment plan. An average time frame would be 18-24 months.

Braces Hygiene

It is extremely important to take good care of your teeth while wearing braces. This includes limited use of pop (soda) and sports drinks which both contain acid that can break down tooth enamel.  Please refer to the following videos to demonstrate good brushing and flossing techniques while in treatment.

Retainers

Once your braces are removed, the best way to keep your teeth straight and your smile beautiful is through retainers. Here at Braces Wyoming, a combination of both fixed and removable retainers are used to maintain your smile. The best way to ensure great results is to wear them exactly as instructed. Otherwise, some of the great progress made by your braces will be lost.

There are three keys to getting the most out of your retainers:

Wear them as directed – this cannot be stressed enough. Most removable retainers need to be worn full time for the first 6 months and then can be worn at nighttime after that. Fixed or “glued-in” retainers should be kept in as long as can be tolerated by the patient. If you chose to have these retainers removed by either Braces Wyoming or your dentist, make sure to get a removable retainer that can be worn at nighttime. Do not go without some form of retention as long as you want your teeth to remain in the position they were placed in after orthodontic treatment.

Keep them clean – we’ll show you how to keep your retainers clean. In doing so, they’ll not only work better, but keep the buildup of bacteria out of your mouth. A thorough cleaning from your dentist is recommended every six months.

Handle with care – if a removable retainer is not in your mouth, it should be placed in its case. While they are easy to lose, they aren’t cheap to replace. Should you lose or break your retainer, contact us immediately and we’ll get a replacement made.

Emergency Care

Most patients will not encounter many “emergencies” while having braces. However, accidents can and do happen. Many orthodontic emergencies can be handled in the comfort of your own home.

Emergencies that require immediate attention from your dentist:

- Direct injury to the tooth or mouth (may also require orthodontic care).

- Lost Tooth Broken Tooth – If part of a tooth broke, again, call us or your dentist.

Orthodontic issues that may require our attention:

- Loose Bracket – Call us if your bracket becomes loose or detached from a tooth.

- Archwire or Ligature Wire Problems – If a portion of the wire has become loose and is poking an area of the mouth, try to limit movement with orthodontic wax. Call us to schedule an appointment to get it fixed.

- Irritation of Lips or Cheeks – New braces can be uncomfortable or irritating to the mouth. Orthodontic wax can be applied to buffer the space between the braces and the rest of the mouth.

- Mouth Sores or General Discomfort – Topical anesthetics such as Orabase and Ora-Gel that are applied with a cotton swab to problem areas can provide some relief. For general discomfort, it is best to eat soft foods. The patient may want to rinse their mouth with warm salt water. Ibuprofen and other over-the-counter pain relievers can be effective in reducing discomfort.

You can handle most any minor problem with your braces with the following supplies:

- Dental floss

- Interproximal brush

- Non-medicated orthodontic relief wax

- Non-prescription pain reliever

- Oral topical anesthetic (such as Orabase or Ora-Gel)
